Commission for wall-mounted sculpture in Wyoming
October 15, 2024
I was asked to create a sculpture for this huge metal-panel-covered wall at a ranch in Wyoming. I wanted the work to have a strong connection to the place both in material and in form.
For material, I used a type of pine wood local to the area (with a special type of reinforcement that I had to develop to compensate for that material’s relative low strength).
Then for the form, after a first visit to see the space I became curious about the Teton Range, the huge set of steep mountains in western Wyoming. The geologic history of its formation involved the collision of two tectonic plates, resulting in one area getting pushed upwards, and one downwards. I used this idea to develop this form:
‘Fault Lines, In and Under’
